The Lonely Goatherd is a sub-business to our farm. We wanted to keep it separate
to keep it simple. And, because I wanted to name it something cool. Yes, it is
from The Sound of Music. No, I will not sing it for you.
We are the first goat dairy in Rockbridge County, Virginia—VDACS approved, to boot. There are goat shares out there. But they cannot sell retail and wholesale products like we can. Even milk for us is out of the question. That requires another permit from the FDA on top of what we have, so we make yummy cheese. Currently we only produce cheese, but we are working on getting butter and ice cream. Cool, right?
The secret to our herd is having a variety of goats. We don't want all of them the same breed—each type brings something different to the table, creating a very distinct cheese. We have a small herd (compared to the big-boy dairies) with a dozen does (female goats) who we milked this season, and hopefully around 40 does at our peak.
Right now we have perfected our chevre (fresh goat cheese). It
comes in 3 flavors: plain, Italian herb, and sweet (dried cranberries, dried
apricots and honey). Our cheese can be found in several shops and restaurants in
We only sell at local markets or at designated drop offs each week. To get on our email list, please drop us a line at the bottom of the page. We can meet you within the Lexington/Buena Vista area to get you the products you need.
CURRENT NEWS: 2/21/14
Our girls are back at the grind, making milk and we are busy trying to keep up making cheese.
Contact us if you'd like to stop by and see the goats or the farm, especially during kidding season (February and March) to play with all the babies! You are always welcome to have a go at milking too.
