My name is Meredith. I am starting a duck egg business. I have Khaki Campbells. They are brown ducks with white eggs. My plan is to sell the eggs at farmers markets this summer. We will be selling in Lexington and Roanoke and Staunton. I’m going to try to sell them to restaurants too.
Duck eggs make baked goods moister than chicken eggs because the yolks are larger. They will lay about 300 eggs every year. That is pretty good for a duck. Nobody else sells duck eggs around here. I am going to name my business “Eggs of Duck”.
My daddy bought me 50 ducklings, but only about 30 are still alive. The others got wet and cold and died. We had to be careful that they didn’t get too wet when drinking because they liked to swim in the water. It was sad to have so many die.
They are living in an extra bathtub in my house with two heat lamps. We use straw for bedding. I feed them little pieces of grain and we try to feed them daddy’s greens from his greenhouse. In the summer we will have fly maggots to feed them too.
We are building a house in the orchard for the ducks. They will have four fields to rotate in. I will get their eggs once a day from their house. Hopefully they will lay them in the house. We will close them in at night and let them out in the morning. My brother thought of putting a string from the duck house and pulling from my bedroom window.
I won’t have eggs until July when they are 6 months old. Hope to you can wait until then to get some fresh duck eggs from “Eggs of Duck”!
